Going Global: How to succeed in international business! 23

Existing group or team dynamics

Culture-Codes and Intercultural Readiness of every person,

project member and team leader

We know from group dynamics that each person within the

group will influence and be influenced by each and every other
individual within the group. A similar pattern of behavior can be
observed in the intercultural context. If we want to work success-
fully with international partners, we need to broaden our behavior-
al repertoire so to speak. As much as we will respond and adapt to
working with a foreign partner, they too will respond and adapt to
our cultural influence. Success lies in a delicate balance of cultural
compromise. And this balance will look different, and in fact be
based on a different set of behavioral parameters, depending on
the country and nature of the business, whether it is a Chinese
manufacturer, a South African bank or the Spanish office of a con-
sulting company.
